Xwejni Salt Pans

The Cini family have been working these salt pans for over a hundred years. Harvest runs May to September.

The pans are cut into the limestone shore between Marsalforn and Żebbuġ. From a distance they read as geometry — pale rectangles holding squares of evaporating sea. Up close they're a working farm. The Cini family have been here for over a hundred years; today Josephine handles the harvest, Emmanuel is still the public face.

The work happens May through September, peaks in midsummer when the sun does most of the labour. If you arrive at the right hour you'll see someone in waders raking salt into pyramids. The shop at the road serves the salt straight from those pyramids — buy a bag and bring it home.
