Tal-Massar Winery

Għarb winery founded in 1934 by Carmelo Hili after he returned from working abroad. The family is still there.

Carmelo Hili came back from abroad in 1934 and planted vines on a piece of Għarb hillside. Nearly a century later his family is still pressing wine from those slopes, the kind of small-island viticulture that turns up in agronomy papers as "heroic" — terraced, dry, hand-worked.

You go to Tal-Massar to taste, but mostly you go to stand in a vineyard above Għarb and look at where the bottle came from. The walk back to the village square is short enough that the afternoon doesn't lose its shape.
