The Essence of Gozo - Land and Sea

Jane Birchall's ceramics and acrylic canvases at Arthall Gozo, on Triq Agius de Soldanis. Clay surfaces that carry the texture of Maltese stone alongside the print of local lace — fragility and rock in the same piece. The carving is heavy; the making process is left visible.

A larger installation at the centre of the show takes on the debris washing up and piling up around the island — global, industrial, ours. It is the work that decides what the rest of the room is about.

Birchall first came to Gozo in 1984 and now splits her year between here and the UK. The show runs 13–16 May at Arthall, 8 Triq Agius de Soldanis, Victoria.
